Arms, Elbows & Hands

The muscles of the hands and forearms are involved in everything from computer work and gripping to lifting, sports and repetitive occupational movements. Tightness or overuse in these areas can sometimes contribute to discomfort that extends through the wrist, elbow or hand.

Common concerns we may work with include:

Carpal tunnel-related muscular tension
Tendonitis & repetitive-use discomfort
Tennis elbow
Forearm tightness & overuse
Golfer’s elbow
Wrist & hand tension
Grip-related fatigue
Repetitive strain patterns

Depending on what you’re experiencing, your therapist may work not only where you feel discomfort, but also with related muscles of the forearm, upper arm, shoulder and surrounding tissues that may be contributing to the tension pattern.

Hips, Glutes & Hip Flexors

The hips are influenced by several muscle groups working together, including the glutes, deep hip rotators and hip flexors. Tightness in these areas can develop from prolonged sitting, exercise, repetitive movement or compensation patterns.

Common concerns we may work with include:

Piriformis-related tension
Psoas & iliacus tension
Deep gluteal tightness
IT band-related muscular tension
Hip-flexor tightness
Lateral hip & thigh tightness
Restricted-feeling hip movement
Running & exercise-related overuse

Depending on what you’re experiencing, your therapist may work with several related muscle groups rather than focusing only on the area where you feel discomfort.

Knees, Thighs & Lower Legs

The muscles of the thighs and lower legs play a major role in how the knees and surrounding joints feel during walking, standing, exercise and everyday movement. Tightness or overuse in these areas can contribute to stiffness, soreness and altered movement patterns.

Common concerns we may work with include:

Quadriceps tightness
Runner’s knee-related tightness
Hamstring tightness or overuse
Shin & lower-leg tension
Calf tension & cramping
Tendonitis & overuse-related discomfort
Muscular tension around the knee
Sports & exercise-related soreness

Depending on what you’re experiencing, your therapist may work above, below and around the area of discomfort rather than focusing only on the knee itself.

Feet & Ankles

The feet and ankles absorb a tremendous amount of stress during standing, walking, running and everyday movement. Tightness in the feet, calves and surrounding tissues can contribute to soreness, stiffness and discomfort that may extend beyond the foot itself.

Common concerns we may work with include:

Plantar fascia-related tension
Heel discomfort related to muscular tension
Arch tightness & foot fatigue
Overuse from prolonged standing or walking
Achilles & calf tension
Running & exercise-related tension
Ankle stiffness
Lower-leg & foot compensation patterns

Because the foot, ankle and lower leg work together, your therapist may also address the calves and surrounding tissues rather than focusing only on where you feel discomfort.

Other Conditions & Muscular Tension Patterns

Not every concern stays confined to one body area. Some conditions and tension patterns can involve several muscle groups, repetitive movement, nerve irritation or compensation throughout the body.

Common concerns we may work with include:

Thoracic outlet-related muscular tension
Neuropathy-related discomfort, when massage is appropriate
Repetitive strain patterns
Tendonitis & overuse
Muscle guarding & compensation patterns
Chronic muscular tightness affecting multiple areas
Postural tension patterns
Sports & activity-related overuse

If you have a diagnosed condition, let your therapist know what you’ve been experiencing. This can help guide the session, determine whether modifications are needed and keep the work appropriate for your comfort and goals.

TECHNIQUES SELECTED FOR YOUR NEEDS

Approaches That May Be Used

Depending on your symptoms, comfort, goals and selected therapist, your session may incorporate one or more techniques to address muscular tension, restricted-feeling movement and overuse patterns.

Deep Tissue

Slower, focused pressure may be used for deeper areas of muscular tension.

Trigger Point Therapy

Focused pressure may be used on sensitive areas that contribute to tightness or referred discomfort.

Cupping

Silicone cups may be incorporated to create gentle tissue lift and work with areas of muscular restriction.

IASTM

Specialized tools may be used to address tight or restricted-feeling soft tissue.

Techniques vary by therapist and are selected according to professional judgment, client preference and individual needs.
A NOTE ABOUT YOUR CARE

Massage Should Always Be Appropriate for You

Massage therapists do not diagnose medical conditions. If you have a diagnosed condition, recent injury, unexplained numbness or weakness, significant swelling or other concerning symptoms, let your therapist know before your session.

This allows your therapist to determine whether the session should be modified, whether certain areas or techniques should be avoided or whether medical evaluation may be appropriate before massage.
